Further information:
As schooling has resumed post-lockdown, it is important to note that not all pupils will handle the stress and uncertainty of the pandemic in a similar manner. Some pupils may not have had access to the internet over the lockdown period and may need some extra help in their learning. Others may be struggling with their mental health, as the pandemic has created a lot of fear and anxiety and may have exacerbated pre-existing mental health conditions in some children and young people.
Make sure to talk with your students and offer them comfort and understanding. These are uncertain times for us all, and everyone needs a little reassurance that what they’re going through is normal. However, it is important to not overly reassure children as it can actually exacerbate anxiety in the long run, as the child will constantly seek it out.
We are all still learning how to handle the pandemic, and now more than ever it is crucial to also check in with yourself in these difficult times.
